International wildlife photographer James Heupel, co-founder of Gallery 195 of Boerne LLC, presents ten or more endangered animals he has photographed in Africa in his 6 photographic trips there in the last 14 years. He has visited Kenya, Tanzania, Botswana, and this past January he photographed the highly endangered mountain gorillas in the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest in Uganda. In 2021, he photographed rescued orphaned elephants in Kenya being nurtured and raised until they are ready to walk away into the wild with wild elephants who visit them in the Tsavo National Park.
While Heupel’s often heartwarming photographs can be seen at Gallery 195, located at 195 South Main Street in the heart of Boerne’s historical district, he wants people to know some of the animals that are slipping away from us, headed towards extinction, and to know efforts that are on-going to save many of them. Thus, his exhibit, “In Danger in Africa” is being presented by Gallery 195. He will be at the Gallery all three days, and speak at four different times: Friday, October 7, at 4 p.m., Saturday, October 8, an 2:00 and 5:00 p.m., and Sunday, October 9, at 1:30 p.m. The talks and photographs are suitable for adults and children alike.
A portion of Gallery sales that weekend will be donated to the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust USA, which works with the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust in Nairobi, Kenya, to rescue, rehabilitate and ultimately release elephants and other wild animals back into the wild, and to stop poaching and snaring of animals in Kenya.
Heupel is a fifteen-year professional photographer who has been honored several times by the North American Nature Photography Association for his photographs, and his photographs are in collections in Europe, Africa, and the United States. He has photographed on all seven continents, including three trips to Antarctica.
